we had one of the first few hints of spring yesterday so i walked around manhattan listening to loud and awesome music on my ipod and loving life. i can't get enough cotton jones and cass mccombs at the moment.

our apartment was just a few blocks from the pompidou center so we spent a good bit of time there checking out the view, the mondrian show (which was really top notch), and the brancusi studio. on my first night there i was wandering around aimlessly when i ran into a camel on the street. say what?

i can't even deal with how insanely beautiful the gardens at versailles are. we were there in january and i was thinking it would be a bit of a bummer sans flowers, but i was totally blown away. my wallet was stolen by some hoodlums on the RER train there and i was sad for about five minutes and then i saw the gardens and the sadness instantly melted away.

i have so many shots and i'm trying to edit as best i can, but it's really tough. the more i look at these shots, the more i love paris. it's really just like new york except they speak a different language and eat baguettes instead of bagels. pretty awesome!

i'm back from my first trip to beautiful paris and i have lots of photos to post. these are a few randoms from around the city. i also have shots from versailes (so amazing), the marais where we stayed, and a few of my other favorite places. we were only there for a few days, but we had such a blast. paris is so so fun!

hello. sorry i have been away for quite awhile. i have been so busy with work that i haven't had a moment to shoot or post, but i have taken a few short trips recently that i wanted to share.

these shots are the first of a series from a trip to estes park, colorado with my husband's family in early december. it was a wonderful vacation and i noticed that many of the fun shots i took were from a car window or a plane window.

here are some shots from our walking day in newport. lots of amazing clapboard houses that were built in the 17th and 18th centuries and have been restored very well. we also checked out the grounds of the tennis hall of fame and saw lots of exotic trees everywhere and ended with the cliff walk which was cool, but definitely not the west coast.

the next stop on our trip was newport, rhode island where we stayed at the lovely francis malbone inn. the website really doesn't do it justice. our room was so pretty with a fireplace and a personal garden and the afternoon tea and breakfast were wonderful.

i'm back!! sorry it's been so long. i have been crazy busy at work, but we did manage to get away for a couple days this weekend and it was amazing. katy elliott did a post about how lovely ipswich, massachusetts is in the fall. boy was she right. we stayed at the inn at castle hill on the crane estate and it was perfect!! the inn was beautifully decorated and we had full range of the 2,100 acre estate which includes beach, marsh, forest, dunes and lots of hikes through all of it. all of these shots were taken on the grounds. i also have a few more in the next post.

gulf coast = beautiful

we went to destin, florida last weekend and it was beautiful. the beaches were clean and the water was clear as ever and there were little minnows swimming around our feet. when we were walking one evening there was the most beautiful sunset on one side of the beach and a rainbow on the other. does it get any better than that? we also woke up at dawn the next morning to catch a flight and saw a beautiful sunrise. pretty much the trifecta.

dan and i took a day trip last weekend up to the bronx and visited the wave hill gardens. it's really beautiful and chill up there at 252nd st. it feels like upstate the second you pass into the bronx. we drove up the west side highway which is also fun and scenic- lots of insanely huge cruise ships, trump place, crazy drivers, etc.

i finally developed my film from this past weekend and here are some shots from the crab feast. dan's lovely grandparent's have a house off the chesapeake bay and they have been hosting an annual crab feast for years on their beautiful land. i have been going for about 8 years and i have finally learned how to properly eat crabs. so tasty and fun!

we went to fort tilden last weekend for a few hours not so much to sit on the beach, but to explore the abandoned military forts and just walk along the water. it was a really fun trip and just a 30 minute drive from our apartment which was a huge plus.

last weekend we checked out the greater new york show at ps1 which was pretty solid. i also love the exterior installation they have now. it's super fun to kick and throw the balls and there is a water feature which is always a plus and hammocks. we almost didn't make it into the museum.

i have been a bit obsessed with central park lately. it's funny since i live in brooklyn and work in times square and i'm never really near the park, but i like to go out of my way to walk through there every chance i get. i especially love belvedere castle which is in the first shot. there are always lots of turtles around there too which is pretty cool. check out the other posts here and here.

the idea of central park blows my mind on a daily (okay, maybe weekly) basis. it's 843 acres in the middle of manhattan and the designers of this city could have easily built a 10 or even 100 acre park and called it a day. thank goodness they didn't. i think we owe a lot of it to olmsted, one of my favorite people and the father of landscape architecture. i also love how well they have preserved his original plan. we walked around for a couple hours and saw maybe one tenth of the park.

when we were leaving the east river state park, we ran into this amazing garden store called jungle. they have been open for almost 2 years and i'm blown away that i haven't heard of them. they have a wonderful selection of plants, trees, furniture, accessories, containers, seeds... everything basically and the 5000 sq ft space is set up beautifully. it's kind of like a mini terrain in my own backyard. nice.

east river state park

the east river state park in williamsburg used to be just a nice place to see manhattan from a field of waist high weeds. now the weeds have been wacked and there is small playground, but not much else has changed. it's still pretty laid back and simple. there are however tons of people there which i assume are the inhabitants of the huge luxury condos along the water. they seem nice enough though. i especially liked the family flying the kite since the wind was perfect and the kite was cool.

i got my film from this weekend developed and i'm so excited. well, i had a few bloopers, but not as many as i expected since i could barely remember how to focus and rewind the film, but still it was a great experience. i have heard people talking about how shooting film is way better than digital for so long, but i finally understand. i love the slowness of the process and the patience it takes to wait for the results. the parts i don't particularly like are the scanning and the price. oh well.

these shots were taken around riverside park in the 90s on the upper west side. i love walking around that neighborhood. lots more photos coming in the next few days.

23rd street hats

today we woke up early and went to the farmer's market to buy granola and yogurt from lissy. i also went on a search of 35mm film which is a million times harder than it was just 5 or 10 years ago. all of the little photo developing shops are closed and even many of the shops that develop film don't sell it. crazy. i took the train home from the 23rd st station (aka the hat station). the ghost hat is my favorite. wonder what occasion you would wear that one to?

i will post some of the film shots i took today as soon as i develop my roll. every time i would take a shot dan would say, "how's it look"? funny how we are so spoiled by those digital cameras. it felt like a test in patience to shoot film today. i loved it.

abc carpet & home is probably the most famous home design destination in new york city. it's enormous and exhausting and filled with lots of treasures. the prices are a bit high (to cover the massive rent they must pay for their prime building), but it's still worth a stroll as it's full of ideas and inspirations.

today we went to fort tryon park in washington heights after visiting the cloisters. the gardens at fort tryon were the most beautiful i have seen in nyc and were originally designed by frederick law olmsted jr, son of the designer of central park and prospect park and so many great parks across the country.

i first read about olmsted senior in that great book about the chicago world fair of 1893, the devil in the white city.

the city reliquary is a super tiny museum of all things williamsburg and new york city on metropolitan avenue. there is a room with a permanent collection and then the back room has a show changing every month or so. it's run by volunteers and most of the items in the museum are donated by locals. very cool idea and very well done. they are open weekends noon to six and it's pay what you will to check it out.

modern 50 is a cool vintage shop based in virginia that has a killer website with great product styling and photography. it reminds me a bit of the simple rustic styling of this. they also deliver regularly to brooklyn which is a plus.

a few random shots from around my house (and one from the dressing room at bird!! i wish i lived there). this post made me realize i really like neutrals with organic rose/peach/pink tones. i am also very proud of my new low profile converse high tops. i have wanted a pair for about 15 years, but i finally bit the bullet since they were on sale. ha ha! so stupid since they cost $35.

i walked through the green dome volunteer's garden in mccarren park the other day and took these shots. my favorite is the tulip growing out of the lamb's ear. i wonder if it was meant to work out that way or if it's a happy coincidence.

we needed a night off from cooking, so dan and i tried a relatively new restaurant in the neighborhood tonight called baba and were pleasantly surprised. it's super cute inside with all the right details, the food was delish and the service was super nice! very excited!

there is also a retail space at the corner of metropolitan and lorimer that has been vacant for a few months, but they have recently started renovations for opening a new business. we played the always fun game of what would be the best business to open on the corner next to our apartment and dan said fruit/vegetable stand and i said flower shop, but we found out tonight by reading the building permit that it will be a bagel shop. we decided that would be just fine, as long as it's a good one.

moon river is one of the best home stores in new york city and is always a pleasure to peruse. it just so happens to be on the same block as sprout home, which is one of the nicest blocks in the neighborhood since many of the houses are very old and covered with ivy and it's off the beat and path, so it's quiet.

i stopped by sprout home yesterday to get a few more goodies for the fire escape and i just love these polymolded planters they have. heavy duty, but light weight and they come in lots of pretty colors.

we went to visit dan's family in wilmington, delaware this weekend and on the way in we stopped at terrain- a store i have been loving since it opened in 2008, but have only visited their website. well, i was expecting a lot from the store (since it's an offshoot of anthropologie) and it still blew my mind! i can't wait to plant my fire escape garden now!

we went to a model shop today with the coolest model train city. dan shopped and i took pictures. it was kind of like being on a real vacation for 5 minutes. i saw grazing sheep, sunbathers, a graveyard with a haunted house and the train depot. very exciting.

we are going to france! i booked our flights on friday with amex points and have been booking rooms, trains, and automobiles all weekend as well. we are flying into paris, staying 2 nights and then taking the TGV train south to avignon where we are renting a car and driving to nice through crillon, marseille, aix en provence, etc. i am simply amazed it is all working out since it has been a dream for so long.

the built by wendy spring line is the perfect wardrobe for summer in the south of france. ooh la la!

i went to see my family this weekend and i took some snapshots in my grandparent's house. the first painting is one of many landscape and still life paintings by my great grandmother. also featured are rocky, the sweet maine coon and young dashing portraits of my grandparents.

yes, i have posted about maryam nassir zadeh before, but that was about the awesomeness of the store. this post is about the awesomeness of the photographs on the website. i talked to the owner, udar who shoots all the products and he said his trick is using a cheap camera. ha. i think it's a little more than that, but thanks for the recession tip.

museum of natural history

i spent almost 4 hours at the museum of natural history yesterday and still missed at least half of the exhibits i wanted to see. it's such a huge place and always inspiring. the taxidermy animals are amazing as usual, but also the textiles and trinkets (usually tools to ward off evil spirits) from the asian, native american and african exhibits were also great. i love that there are no picture taking rules either. flashes are even ok which is funny since everything is behind glass and therefore flashing = bad.

vinegar hill house

today, dan and i went to brunch at vinegar hill house. vinegar hill is the cutest little area in brooklyn that looks like a quaint old village. the building across the street from the restaurant (which was built in 1817) had the nicest lace curtains. the interior and food at the restaurant were all perfect.
